Present: Mountain View, CA, (knecarter@aol.com). Retired, "out to pasture, with assorted farm animals". Grad 1966 U of Akron, Bus (Marketing).
Activities in HS: Hall Monitor...Stardusters dance group. (Was a favorite of Principal Schneyer who was dance sponsor), this did not help my geek image. Was one of two accordion players in talent shows, only one who played "Honkey Tonk" on accordion, as opposed to "Lady of Spain", (might have helped improve my geek image). Homage to other accordionist, Don Siddall.
Favorite HS memories: Getting caught smoking in bathroom by Ass't Principal, swatted and sent home. Going to corner drugstore for lunch and smokes. Making out during noon movies. Getting punched-out after school for being geek.DWG (Driving While Geek) i.e., driving to Garner's on Fri nights in Dad's '56 Chrysler Imperial without a date and wondering why the stares?
Achievements: Was a pre-curser to the "Bart Simpson School of Under-Achievers". My most scholastic achievement was having flunked out of college ONLY ONCE! Encountered 'future person of greatness' by riding in car-pool Senior year with John Lithgow and his sister Robin, (John was a Sophmore). Years later in 1991, while he was making a movie in Mtn View (Raising Cain), I contacted John and he invited me into his trailor for a visit between scenes. (He never went 'Hollywood', a real person)...
During Summer of '62, worked as Tour Guide at Seattle World's Fair....After Sophmore year at UA (flunked out), took a year off and in '63 returned to Seattle to work
as a Guide at "Pacific Science Center" (formerly the US Pavillion during World's Fair). Returned to Akron U to finish studies.
Still married to same woman for almost 40 yrs. People ask: "the same woman?, Only one marriage, why?" My best reply is: "lack of imagination". As a side note, after all these years, wife has drawn a knife on me ONLY 3 times. People ask: "3 times?'...my response..."that's love!".
Future Goals: Not to get arrested, again. Donate my body to Vassar (there have been requests), and find a loop-hole in the 'Hippocratic Oath'.'
After College: Peace Corps training for Ecuador, didn't make final cut. Branch Office Mgr Training for Insurance Co in East Orange, NJ, followed by assignments in Manhattan, Long Island, Charlotte, and Seattle, where I quit my job, and relocated to San Francisco in 1968 in time for the "Summer of Love". Became a 'quasi-hippie', but still in the mainstream of commerce (didn't overdose, but almost). Mgm't Trainee, General Tire, in San Jose. (Sent back to Akron for training..what the heck?)...Adm Ass't, Stanford University Grad School of Electrical Engineering (encountered William Shockley, Nobel Prize winner as co-inventor of the transistor))....Silk-Screen Printing Business Owner, one of first to introduce souvenir T-Shirts in Northern Baja, Mexico (San Felipe, Ensenada, Rosarito Beach)...Partners in Brazilian-Coffee importing business..Became a 'Mr Mom' for daughter's first 3 yrs (wife worked at Stanford, I worked at home)...returned to Stanford for 2 yrs, particpated in project to consolidate Gov't-Funded reasearch projects's equipment into a centralized database...Daughter now finishing Grad studies at UC San Francisco Medical Center to become a Nurse Prcticioner). (Nerves are shot after having raised a daughter)....Trying to retire gracefully without outraging neighbors...Looking forward to next reunion. (Hope it's 'dress optional', as I want to wear my dress).
Hobbies/Interests:..Piano/Acordion..listening to Lawrence Welk/Debbie Boone (Old geeks never die, they just slowly fade away), also Led Zeppelin, ELO, Black Sabbath, Wu-Tang Clan, etc...photography (through neighbor's windows), walking dog, any dog...pressing wild flowers in scapbook, talking to trees, knitting/darning socks, putting on airs, ending world hunger (I eat more), collecting crab grass and navel lint (except when I give up lint for lent), rescuing wild boars, and trying to remember old fantasies. ( only one I can conjure up involve 'The flying Nun' and assorted farm animals).
Regards to all...Ken
